The fifth grade service learning team at Bath Elementary School is going to supply nonperishable healthy snacks and books to students at Neithercut Elementary School (K-5) in Flint, Michigan. We are trying to reverse the effects of the lead in the students’ blood because their drinking water supply had lead in it. The books will help their brains grow and develop. The healthy snacks will help reverse the effects of the lead that is in their blood. It also helps because for some families healthy eating is not an option.
We have created a flyer asking for donations from the Bath Elementary School families. We also wrote letters to various businesses in the community asking for donations. We have received $200 so far!
We called healthy snack companies requesting donations. We haven’t been to successful with that one. With any money we raise from ePIFanyNow™ we will buy as many healthy snacks as we can and make sure they are delivered to Neithercut Elementary School.
We hope our project is picked for the Y-PIF award because it has been over 1,000 days since the residents of Flint have been able to drink water from their taps. We feel fortunate that we can drink fresh water and bathe with out thinking about it. We want to help these kids because we want to make a difference! We can’t imagine what it would be like to not have clean water and the water we did have, poison our bodies. Sometimes we take what we have for granted and others aren’t as fortune as us!
